About the AppCard
Having an AppCard is all you need to identify yourself as a member of the Appalachian State University community.
The AppCard works as a multifunction ASU photo ID card for students, faculty and staff. You can have your AppCard made at the AppCard Office in Trivette Hall Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. APPCARD OFFICE TELEPHONE NUMBER: 828-262-6141
The AppCard provides access to:
- Meal Plan Accounts
- Express Accounts
- Library checkouts
- Residence Halls
- Recreation facilities
- Intercollegiate events
- Many other services offered by ASU.
Please remember that the AppCard is the ONLY access to your Meal and/or Express Account. If you lose your card, report it to the AppCard Office, so it can be invalidated. After 5:00 pm and on weekends, you should report lost AppCards to University Police or log into your AppalNET Account to deactivate your AppCard online.
The person to whom the AppCard is issued is responsible for its use, including any misuse. If your card is lost or stolen, you will be held responsible until it is reported lost or stolen.
The AppCard and Your Meal Account
Having a Meal Account allows a student to purchase food and food-related items from all food service locations, in vending machines, at The Markets (campus convenience stores), for catering purchases and for concessions at sporting events.
Meal Accounts:
- Are required for students who live in residence halls.
- Will automatically be ready for use, when you pay your tuition and fees on time.
- Operate on a declining balance system, which makes it possible for students to decide where and when to spend their money. All food items are à la Carte in the dining concepts.
- Are accepted in all Appalachian Food Services locations and vending machines.
You may purchase a Meal Account or add to your balance at the AppCard Office in Trivette Hall or by calling us at 828-262-6141. We accept MasterCard, Visa, checks and cash for deposits. You may also make a deposit online.
Balances on Meal Accounts carry over from Fall to Spring semester and end on May Commencement.
The ONLY refund granted from a Meal Account takes place when the student goes through the official withdrawal process through the university. Any money refunded will be from the current semester only. Click here for the refund policy for Meal Accounts.
No Meal Account money may be transferred to the Appalachian Express Account.
The AppCard and Your Express Account
The Appalachian Express Account is an optional account that may be set up for a student’s convenience. This account allows for funds to be deposited and then accessed by the AppCard in specific campus locations.
The Express Account DOES NOT REPLACE the meal account for on-campus students!
Express Accounts:
- Can be opened with as little as $20.00 and can be added to at any time.
- Can be used in all food services units, laundry machines, the University Bookstore and more.
- Are separate from Meal Accounts, but are still accessed by the AppCard.

Balances on Express Accounts carry over from Fall to Spring semester and end on May Commencement.
Full refunds are available only through official withdrawal from the University during a semester. Any Appalachian Express Account spring balances can be refunded for the amount exceeding $50, if requested. For example, an Appalachian Express Account with $110 balance would get a $60.00 refund.
